Our Story
Patrick’s Hardware dates back to 1895, when W.T. Patrick opened a general store on the corner of Queen Street and Back River Road in Hampton, VA. W.T.’s original general store survived two world wars, a great depression, and has been passed on to his sons, grandsons, and great grandsons. Over the years our general store began selling more and more hardware and eventually evolved into the hardware store known today as Patrick’s Hardware. In 1995, after 100 years of business, we expanded our custom glass services into a separate glass company, Patrick’s Glass, located just down the road from Patrick’s Hardware. Patrick’s Hardware is currently owned and operated by Cary Patrick Jr, sons Cary Patrick III and Ryan Patrick. We are fully supported by our extended family of amazing employees.
While the faces in the store have changed over the years, the core values that our family passed from generation to generation remain. Have complete dedication to our customers and their satisfaction, work with integrity, and have some fun in the process! Our great grandfather’s mission that “our customers are our family!” reigns as true today as it did in 1895. We are thankful to our loyal customers, unbelievable employees and the family that paved our way in celebrating more than 120 years of business. Our fourth-generation Patrick family is now in our third century (1895-present) of serving residents, businesses, and local governments from Richmond, Virginia to the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
1895: W.T. Patrick opens general store.
1933: Son Cary E. Patrick joins business.
1938: Son A. Woodfin “Pat” Patrick joins business and business becomes W.T. Patrick and Sons.
1947: Grandson, A. Woodfin “Woody” Patrick Jr. joins the business.
1976: Grandson, Cary E. Patrick, Jr. joins the business.
1984: Patrick’s Hardware becomes a Benjamin Moore paint distributor.
1995: Patrick’s Glass, specializing in commercial & residential glass opens its own separate location.
2002: Patrick’s Hardware expands into lawn and garden products.
2013: Great Grandson, Ryan Patrick, joins the business.
2014: Patrick’s Hardware expands within line of marine and boating accessories.
2016: Great Grandson, Cary Patrick III, joins the business.
